Out of the 24 councillors of the Brikama Area Council, 17 have voted against their chairman becoming a second time head of local government area.
Incumbent Sunkary Badjie polled 7 votes against Bakary Saibo Sanneh’s 9 votes and incumbent Lamin Jamba Jammeh’s 8. Mr. Sanneh emerged winner of the election of the Chairmanship of the Brikama Area Council.
Shock amidst euphoria
Reports spoke of “shock amidst euphoria of jubilation at Brikama Area Council grounds yesterday. The governor of West Coast Region, Mr. Lamin Sanneh and mayor of Grand Yoff, Dakar, were present to witness the contest.
The later was invited by incumbent chairman, who along with governor Sanneh were to witness the historic second term in office.
“It was a shock to many present,” an eyewitness told Gambia Beat.
“Dressed in white robes of a Meccan pilgrim, Alhaji Sunkary Badjie appeared at the election grounds brimming with confidence of winning without opposition,” our source added.
Foni Councillors protest
A political analyst present at the event attributed the situation of Badjie’s defeat to internal conflicts within the Council. Out of the 24 councillors in the council, 10 are from Foni while 14 come from the Kombos.
“The councilors of Fonis have grouped themselves into an association. During the last chairmanship election, they were the ones who backed Badjie’s candidature on the grounds that he runs for just one term,” the analyst said.
However, Sanneh wanted to go for a second term which his colleagues did not endorse. They instead endorsed the candidacy of Mr. Sanneh, he added.
